Rainfall and Wind Warnings – Nova Scotia – January 4, 2017

Nova Scotia weather update.

Rain, heavy at times is expected. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall. Ice pellets mixed with freezing rain over eastern areas will gradually changeover to rain this morning as the warm air and rain over southwestern Nova Scotia spreads northward this morning. Further rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 millimetres are expected with this system along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia, with locally higher amounts possible in heavy downpours. Coastal regions may experience higher than normal water levels with the high tide today. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Also causing bridge closures.

Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring. Strong easterly winds gusting to 90 km/h will spread up the Atlantic Coast this morning and reach Cape Breton by noon. Over the Cape Breton Highlands, Les Suetes winds are expected to develop this morning with gusts reaching 140 km/h by afternoon. Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.
