A national trucking company has begun work on a state-of-the-art transportation hub on Berry Mills Road that will allow it to grow significantly in Moncton, both now and in the future.
"We're looking at opening next summer or in the early fall of next year," Maritime-Ontario Freight Lines Ltd. president Doug Munro said yesterday.
Nova Scotia-born and Brampton, Ontario based M-O searched for three years for the ideal location for its next leap forward. The company found it at its new location, chosen because of the proximity to CN's inter-modal network next to the Moncton Industrial Developments Park, and to the Trans-Canada Highway. The location will also allow the company to expand its use of double trailers, increasing efficiency and, as it expects, business.
The new site comprises more than 46 acres near the Westmorland-Albert Solid Waste property, fronting Berry Mills Road. The firm is developing 18 acres for now. While rumors have run rampant that a second trucking firm would move onto the rest of the property, Munro said that's not the case. M-O will use the rest of the land for future growth.
"That's a big site for trucking," Munro said. "This represents a big commitment for us."
To compare, M-O's current presence in Caledonia Industrial Estates is but a tiny fraction of the size of the new location under construction now.
When it is finished, the $18.5-million hub will feature an attractive, pre-cast concrete and glass building of two storeys in height and dozens of docks on a roller-compacted concrete site.
Because of space restrictions at their current site, the firm mostly serves the immediate Metro Moncton market. With the new facility, M-O will be able to cater to companies looking to ship multiple trailers of goods as well as partial loads, and at the same time serve as a transfer point for inbound freight from points west for distribution all over the Maritimes.
The building will feature the latest technology in the industry in a modern building featuring 12-foot (3.6-metre) high ceilings in pristine surroundings, all designed to attract the top talent in the industry and keep them with M-O throughout their careers in a field where human resources can prove a challenge.
"We're building it that way so that our staff will hopefully enjoy working there," Munro said.
Several jobs are expected to be created by M-O's expansion, with new positions created both in the office as well as on the road. Sales, dispatching, administration, driver support and the full range of services necessary for this type of operation will be based in the building.
The firm does a significant amount of business with the food industry, so the modern, clean building and paved freight yard allows M-O to outwardly project its commitment to cleanliness and attention to detail that those types of clients are looking for in a carrier. "We find that our customers demand these types of facilities," Munro said.
M-O's roots began in Nova Scotia in 1962, providing less-than-truckload and full truckload service between Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario. The company expanded the network into Western Canada to establish a comprehensive terminal network from coast to coast. Over that time, M-O created multiple divisions allowing them maximum flexibility, including M-O FreightWORKS, M-O COLDchain, M-O DedicatedWORKS, M-O PaperXPRESS, M-O LogisticWORKS and Bulk Services.

U.S. Xpress and Maritime-Ontario Announce North American Shipping Partnership

New service allows shippers to use one vendor to cover all North American freight, border crossing needs

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – August 7, 2012 – U.S. Xpress Enterprises, a leading provider of transportation services throughout North America, and Maritime-Ontario Freight Lines Limited (M-O) a top Canadian freight carrier, have partnered to launch a cross-border North American shipping solution. Through the partnership, each company will leverage its dominant national network to move freight across the border and throughout each country, creating one seamless North American network, covering the United States, Canada and Mexico.

This unique partnership comes as a response to customer demand for a one-stop direct carrier option with the geographic footprint, ease of access and capacity they need to take their freight safely across the border and to its final destination with no hassles, head-aches or the need for third party vendors.

Under terms of the agreement, M-O will carry the freight across the Canada/ U.S. border crossing and U.S. Xpress will be responsible for Mexico/U.S. Border crossings. The border crossings served through the partnership are Buffalo/Niagara and Detroit/Windsor. To ensure the security of the freight and facilities, M-O has completed the rigorous requirements and testing necessary to earn its C-TPAT certification in Canada and PIPS certification in the United States, and U.S. Xpress has been recognized as C-TPAT compliant.

“The bottom line here is that cross-border shipping is not easy, and there are not many good options available to carriers who want one point of contact,” said John White, executive vice-president of sales and marketing, U.S. Xpress. “This service brings together two like-minded, high performing companies to give shippers the convenience and peace of mind that comes from dealing with one trusted carrier who can get their goods where they need to go safely and on-time, effectively erasing the border and the issues associated with crossing it.”

The service has been designed to cover the widest possible range of needs and price points and will employ truckload, refrigerated, dedicated and some limited LTL options

through team and solo arrangements. To take advantage of each company’s strong rail presence, intermodal services will also be used as appropriate.

While U.S. Xpress and M-O believe that the retail sector will generate the greatest demand for this service, it is suited to everything from pharmaceuticals to grocery to manufacturing.

“While many companies on both sides of the border claim to have an international presence, the extent of their reach is limited,” said Maritime-Ontario chief operating officer, Bill Henderson. “With our partnership, we will have more than just a few trucks over the border. Both companies offer best-in-class transportation solutions and are recognized premium brands in their respective countries. Needless to say, we believe this is a true game-changer for North American freight hauling.”
